Buyer's Guide

Rear Mount, Mid Mount and Tractor Drawn

Start with the buildings you run on, how close the truck can set up, and what it needs to do once it is in place. If you are deciding between a straight aerial and a quint, the main question is whether you need the truck to pump. Quints are listed on used quints.

Most common

Rear Mount

Turntable at the rear. The most common aerial configuration in the US.

Low bay doors

Mid Mount

Turntable behind the cab. Often a lower travel height, which can matter with a low bay door.

Tillered

Tractor Drawn

A tractor and tillered trailer. Maneuverable for its length in tight streets, and it requires a trained tiller operator.

Tower Ladders, Aerial Platforms and Aerialscope

A platform puts a working basket at the tip of the aerial, used for rescue, elevated master streams and extended work at height.

Tower ladder and aerial platform are generally used interchangeably, though usage varies by region. Aerialscope is a specific telescoping boom platform design, originally a Mack product and now built by Seagrave, so many used units are on Mack chassis. If you are looking for one specifically, tell us and we will watch for one.

Platforms are generally heavier than comparable straight aerials. Check the rated tip load for how you plan to use the truck, with personnel in the basket and water flowing.
