Understanding Rescue Body Styles
Walk-In
An enclosed body you can stand and work inside, with room for personnel, staged equipment, and often rehab or command. Usually longer and heavier, with less outside compartment access.
Non-Walk-In / Walk-Around
No interior working space. All compartments open from outside, which generally gives more exterior compartment volume for the same length.
Combination
Part interior working space, part exterior compartments.
What to Look For
Heavier rescues often carry some combination of cascade air, a light tower and a generator. On a rescue body, compare usable compartment space, not the number of doors.
These are sometimes removed or out of service by the time a truck is sold, so verify rather than assume.
Cascade / Breathing Air
Breathing air storage and a fill station. Check bottle hydro dates and compressor hours, and whether the compressor is included.
Light Tower
Check generator hours as well as tower function.
Generator
Its size determines what can run at once.
Compartmentation
Compare cubic feet of compartment space and how it is divided, not the number of doors.
Equipment Storage
Ask what shelving, trays and tool mounting remain, and whether the layout suits your equipment.
What Does
"Squad" Mean?
“Squad” means different things by region: a heavy rescue in some places, an EMS or manpower unit in others, and elsewhere a lighter tool-and-personnel truck with little or no pump.
When you call, describe the body style, chassis class and what it needs to carry.
